A Message from Our Pastor,
Don Hutchinson

I was re-reading a few pages from a book I had used in the past as part of my devotional time. It’s entitled On the Anvil by Max Lucado. There, I was reminded of something he called “anvil time.” Let me summarize: Anvil time is when we find ourselves heated up, melted down, and placed on God’s anvil. It happens for a number of reasons but especially when our spiritual fire goes out. And no matter how many encouraging words people may say to us, it doesn’t help. We still hurt. That’s when you know its anvil time.

It can be brought on by any of the storms of life we encounter: the death of a loved one, a broken relationship, or even the daily grind of life. Our typical response is to twist and turn until we’ve done everything we can do except turn to God. Anvil time is not something we really desire, but something we may need. The Master Blacksmith knows the kind of instrument he wants us to be and so the hammer slams as the sparks fly. Slowly, our hearts begin to be reshaped. What was dull becomes sharp and what was weak becomes strong.

Where are you in the process? Are you on God’s anvil? If so, be grateful. It simply means that God values you. He’s not finished with you, with us. He loves you and sees you as an instrument for noble purposes.

Grace and peace,
Don Hutchinson
